The Dell 1320cn Printer and macOS

Do you have a Dell 1320c or 1320cn? And a Mac? Are you tired of not being able to print? Fret no more!

The drivers from Dell are... well, they're gone. Dell deleted all reference to them. Thanks, Mike. But, as is so often the case, the hardware inside that Dell printer isn't really Dell at all. What you actually have is a revamped version of the Fuji Xerox DocuPrint C525.

Sadly, Fuji Xerox are just as keen to sell you a new printer as Dell, even if yours is still working perfectly 4101 days after making an eerily similar post!

Installation

You can't install the drivers from anywhere now, including Apple's website, where they used to have them bundled up into a snazzy, auto-updating package. Thankfully, for reasons unknown, an ever-so-slightly updated version of the driver is available. This should work on every PowerPC and Intel Mac ever released, all the way up to todays macOS Sequoia.

You'll need to supplement (or just replace) your /Library/Printers directory with the contents of Printers_C525_v33.tgz. Restart CUPS from the Terminal with:

sudo launchctl stop org.cups.cupsd
sudo launchctl start org.cups.cupsd

Then just head to System Settings > Printers & Scanners and click "Add Printer, Scanner or Fax..." to install a printer, a scanner, or a... fax machine?

My 1320c is the networked version, so I just chose 'IP' and entered the address. Either LPD or Socket connection should be fine. Give it a name and location, then open up the list next to the 'Use' label. Choose 'Select Software...' and search for C525.

With any luck you should see v3.3, which correctly defaults the driver to using the paper feeder which every version of this printer was supplied with, and not the flippin' bypass tray.

Done

Believe it or not, unless your fuser has fused, you should now be able to print! Even the Supply Levels screen still works!

I don't miss having a secondary monochrome-only driver, because that would be dumb, and easily rectified with setting presets. If you'd like AirPrint compatibility, you can install AirPrint Bridge and print from your iPhone like a weirdo.

With that you should be printing lovely colour copies from that black monolith for years to come. Or until Apple removes Rosetta from macOS, because the CUPS filters the driver relies upon are compiled for ppc7400, i386, and x86_64.
